Versailles - Catching Up

Ok so I know I'm very late to the party with this one but I have recently got round to watching the first season of Versailles. For those of you who haven't watched it yet, I seriously recommend it! It's all about King Louis XIV and the building of the famous Versailles Palace in France. I won't give away spoilers but every episode keeps you on your toes and leaves you wanting more. Luckily for me I had it all recorded so I didn't need to wait a week for the next episode but now that I've caught up I'm desperate for more!

One of the factors that really pulls in my interest with Versailles is that it's a multi-strand narrative which means it follows a variety of plot lines. Admittedly, sometimes it does get a little bit difficult when trying to determine what's happening to whom but the majority of the time it's gripping and compelling. Obviously some facts are dramatised but nevertheless, for me it's incredibly interesting to learn about the state of the French monarchy in the 17th Century.

All characters are perfectly cast in my opinion. Each actor takes on the role and brings it to life, with George Blagden as King Louis and Alexander Vlahos as Louis' brother, Philippe. Philippe has particularly caught my eye throughout the series as he's trying to battle so many demons. Again, I can't go into specific detail without giving away spoilers!

Overall, Versailles is magnificently put together, showing the struggles and losses King Louis XIV and his court had to suffer, as well as the strives and the achievements. I can't wait for Season 2 which is set to air early this year.
